VANITY FAIR published a wonderful article by David Ansen about Aaron
Sorkin’s upcoming movie The Trial of the Chicago 7. We also got a glimpse
at Kelvin Harrison Jr, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt
in the movie, which Netflix will release on October 16.

Some of my favorite parts/quotes from the article:

Sorkin has boiled down the trial into a movie that will run just short of two
hours. “For me that’s a short!” he says. “It’s a great courtroom drama.”
But the trial was just one of three stories he wanted to tell with the movie.
The second was the evolution of the riot. “How did we go from what was
supposed to be a peaceful anti-war demonstration to this incredibly bloody
and violent confrontation?” The third, “more personal and emotional”
strand is a kind of love story, the bond that developed between Abbie Hoffman
and Tom Hayden, “two people who didn’t get along very well at the beginning
and came to have a lot of respect for each other.” You can expect comedy,
but, says Sorkin, “in our movie we use that humor to fool you for a second
before we punch you in the gut.”

Marveling at his cast, Sorkin says, “It was like driving a Ferrari.
My one job was making sure they were all in the same movie.”

...On Chicago 7, the entire cast and 300 extras were packed into a simulated
courtroom in Paterson, New Jersey, watching one another’s every move.
“It was fantastic,” Baron Cohen recalls. “We’d do a take and when we
stopped, 300 extras were cheering and applauding. I felt like I was
watching a brilliant Broadway production.”...

...Langella was amazed by Redmayne’s focus: For three weeks he sat in the
courtroom without a single line to say, but never lost his concentration...

“Working with Aaron was on my bucket list,” - says Eddie.

“The words are so brilliant. They’re gold dust,” says Redmayne,
who says he felt great sadness when the shoot was over, as
he’d never get to speak his lines again.

The Trial of the Chicago 7 heads to Netflix

NEWS!!!

Netflix has secured the global rights to THE TRIAL OF THE CHICAGO 7
for an estimated $56M. Paramount was previously the domestic distributor
and the film was due for theatrical release in a host of international markets
but the coronavirus wrecked that plan.

The film had been due for domestic release at the end of September.
It now lines up as another potential awards contender for Netflix.
Release date has not been set but it’s likely to be on the platform
before the November election.

One of the most interesting things for me is the relationship between
Tom Hayden (Eddie Redmayne) and Abbie Hoffman (Sacha Baron Cohen).
They hated each-other at the beginning, and ended up after the trial
like brothers. Eddie plays Tom, who in a climactic scene, blows up
when Abbie  asks him, “What’s your problem with me?” Tom says:
"My problem is, that for the next 50 years, when people think of
progressive politics, they're going to think of you. They're going to think
of you and your idiot followers passing out daisies to soldiers and trying
to levitate the Pentagon. They're not going to think of equality or justice,
they're not going to think of education or poverty or progress. They're
going to think of a bunch of stoned, lost, disrespectful, foul-mouthed,
lawless losers. And so we'll lose elections." (source: nytimes)

Eddie joined Katherine last week to support Spare Hand and NHS

Katherine Waterston @katherinewaterston posted these new photos on Instagram
with the caption: "I adore you, Eddie. Thank you for coming out with me last week
to support @spare_hand. We had a great time working with @royalfreelondonnhs
and their amazing volunteer team making scrubs for the NHS."

Update: A new photo posted by Royal Free Charity @RoyalFreeChty
Thank you to the incredible @WacArts and @Spare_Hand for helping
to connect #RoyalFreeCharity with the most dedicated volunteers.
#SpareHand brought #KatherineWaterston and #EddieRedmayne along
to support volunteers making surgical gowns for staff at @RoyalFreeNHS

One of the volunteers shared this photo on her blog and was like,
“Eddie Redmayne has come to make scrubs for medical staff.
He was humble as I’ve heard. He was working hard on it, cutting
cloth as he was taught and sometimes with a smile on his face.”

Katherine Waterston and Jude Law are both regular SpareHand volunteers,
and last week Eddie Redmayne joined his Fantastic Beasts co-stars too.

"At the start of the pandemic, I got COVID-19 and was hospitalized here
in London, where I received fantastic treatment from the NHS. While
I was recuperating at home and considering how I might meaningfully
give back, my friend Scott Liddle told me about his idea for SpareHand,
and I immediately jumped on board. It’s been great to be part of SpareHand
and to witness its phenomenal growth in just a couple of months. It’s been
great to see how individuals and charities alike have taken to the service;
to hear them rave about its ease of use is really encouraging. I have always
suspected that there’s a large portion of the population who want to volunteer
but are deterred from doing so because they don’t know how or where or
like me, they have schedules that make it difficult to commit to regular
service – SpareHand solves all these problems." - Katherine Waterston
