Glorious 39 - BTS - Eddie on his preparation, the film and the cast

“There were lots of wonderful books to read which gave me a good amount of
background, I also wanted to get into the time period so listened to a lot of jazz
and old records – I think that’s such an important way to seep yourself into the
era…Stephen was of course incredibly helpful as well and lent us some amazing
diary entries from that time period, which were just fascinating to read through."

“When I started acting all the scripts that I read and especially loved were always
family dramas. I think that’s because scratch the surface and practically every family
will have a certain amount of confusion, horror and excitement lurking underneath
and that is what anybody can relate to. In Glorious 39 there is this facade of
contentment with Stephen maximising the idea of utopia and the ideal but scratch
that away and pile on an awful lot of pressure and the cracks begin to appear.”

“There are the most wonderful group of actors in this, across all generations. Juno,
Romola and Charlie especially are good friends of mine which has made it so much
fun – and then of course working with people like Bill Nighy, Julie Christie and
Jenny Agutter is incredible as they are actors I have admired for a very long time.”

The majority of filming was up in Norfolk, which despite the freezing weather Eddie
relished “Getting to live up in Norfolk for a month was great, it’s such a beautiful
part of the country although in November it was pretty cold and the poor girls
especially were constantly shivering. We could at least wear lots of layers, but they
always had short sleeved dresses on so the costume department were armed with
hot water bottles and blankets at all times just to keep them alive between takes!”

Eddie and Romola Garai for In Style UK 2009 December - TBT

Eddie Redmayne and his Glorious 39 co-star Romola Garai dressed up for the 2009 December issue
of In Style UK. This hair style makes him look so much different. I prefer his own style though.

Glorious 39 was a dream role for him. "I was so chuffed to be a part of it.
I got to work with Bill Nighy, David Tennant, Juno Temple, my good mate
Charlie Cox, Julie Christie, Romola. What a cool group to film with."

Eddie on his 'pinch yourself' moment at Oscars 2009: "Me and a load of other Brit actors
went to Elton John's Oscars party. We all ended up sitting cross-legged on the floor, drinking
and having a great time, while thinking, 'How on earth are we allowed to be here?'" (via)

Eddie about his character Ralph Keyes in Glorious 39:
“We are all part of this wealthy and rather eccentric family who all seem to get
on incredibly well. Ralph is the only son and has recently started working in
the Foreign Office, I’m sure he would have gone to a very good public school
to university and now in his early 20s has a great job and the world at his feet...
I think all Ralph’s life, his older sister Anne has kind of been in control, the
head of their threesome and now suddenly Ralph has this new authority and
power so we see that the balance has shifted slightly which I think he is rather
enjoying! The idea of having that amount of power at a relatively young age is
a pretty exciting position to be in and that is reflected in his position in the

Eldorado Press Night at Arcola Theatre

Eddie Redmayne and Romola Garai (his co-star in Glorious 39) attended the Eldorado press night today.
ELDORADO - This production is the UK Premiere of Marius von Mayenburg's play Translated by Maja Zade,
directed by Simon Dormandy - Eddie's drama teacher in Eton.
See the full casting announcement and bios on the Mongrel Thumb Website
Arcola Theatre site of the play

Eddie Redmayne has just arrived! (x) - Eddie Redmayne, Romola Garai
and our director Simon Dormandy enjoy the post press night party.(x)

About the play:
Anton's got it made: dream house, artistic wife, baby on the way. And, as the smoke rises from another city saved by coalition bombs, there's a fortune to be made rebuilding the wreckage. So what's he doing forging his boss's signature? And why has his wife crushed her hands under the piano lid? Painfully funny scenes of married bliss in meltdown and the insistent presence, on their screens and in their dreams, of the West's far-flung and half-forgotten wars - Eldorado asks what happens when the drive for success carries us past our coping point.

My note about Romola Garai and Simon Dormandy: Both of their surnames are Hungarian.
Garai means: from Gara (Gara is a village 189 km South from Budapest) Her great-grandfather,
Bernhard "Bert" Garai, a Hungarian immigrant. (x)
Dormandy (Dormándy) means: from Dormánd ( Dormánd is a village 115 km East from Budapest).
The "y" in the end refers to noble origin.

Glorious 39 - Look I made gifs

I made these gif from the first few minutes of the film. We hadn't felt yet the atmosphere of the tension before the war in the Keyes family. The ruined castle the only that refers to the upcoming tense period. (source video)

Eddie Redmayne interview about Glorious 39 (link to the video)
This is a very interesting interview, which isn't on Youtube (length 4:25)

Eddie Redmayne about filming 'Glorious 39':
"Despite the fact that we were shooting the glorious summer of 1939 in freezing-cold Norfolk, it was a really wonderful shoot. We lived the quintessential English dream in Burnham Market and I got to wear very high-waisted trousers. It was a tricky part for me. The irony is that I found it most tricky because I was playing so close to type. I was playing a guy who had probably been to Cambridge, and probably been to Eton, yet I had to have dialect lessons. I couldn't believe I struggled with it. That messed with my head a bit."
