TODAY Show interview on the timeliness of the courtroom drama

Stars Eddie Redmayne, Sacha Baron Cohen, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II.
chat with Al Roker about the timeliness of ‘The Trial of the Chicago 7’.

"Most actors love Aaron Sorkin's writing because he writes very intelligent characters
who speak incredibly quickly, and basically substantially brighter than you are..."

"One of the great pleasures of this film for me was being surrounded
by this extraordinary band. It felt like this sort of wonderful clashing
of different types of music. You had a bit of jazz, you had a bit of
punk, and classical, all of these things combining."

“The writing is so muscular and full, that actually we’re just so sad
not to get to say those words again, so maybe they’ll be. I heard, that
originally Aaron thought about doing it as a musical, so maybe...”

In the video below you can watch the part of the interview when
Eddie was asked about his approach of playing Tom Hayden.
The video is edited, zooming on Eddie's part of the screen.

For Eddie Redmayne, who plays Hayden, it was all on the page. “Hayden
had an extraordinary facility with speech, but with a quiet integrity that
drew people toward him,” the actor said of the leader of the protests.

SBIFF - The Trial of the Chicago 7 online Q&A

New Q&A with writer & director Aaron Sorkin and actors Yahya Abdul-Mateen II,
Sacha Baron Cohen, Eddie Redmayne, & Jeremy Strong (November 16, 2020)

The online ZOOM event was moderated by Roger Durling • SBIFF executive director

Eddie's smile brightens your day.

“...the first time humor, and any performance I’ve ever done, been connected...”

"Tom, in the way that Aaron organized the film...he is the sort of antithesis
of Abby. He is perhaps straighter and more suit and tied than he actually
was because it plays out that dynamic and infuses the drama with more..."

“... What was important to me was that you saw in those early moments
glimpses of charisma because his charisma was so extraordinary but
it was a quiet charisma. If you ever watch on YouTube his speeches,
he had extraordinary rhetorical capabilities that drew people to him...”

“Aaron said on day one, this is a painting, not a photograph, and
I wanted to be his version of that person."

THR cover story about The Trial of the Chicago 7

"Aaron Sorkin, SachaBaronCohen, Jeremy Strong, YahyaAbdul-Mateen II, and
Eddie Redmayne reveal why it took nearly 20 years to get #TrialOfTheChicago7
made and why it’s still “bracingly current” (09/23/2020)
Click on the link below for the full The Hollywood Reporter article:

Sorkin’s script draws a sharp contrast between Hoffman and Rubin’s campy
methods and Hayden’s more reserved approach to the anti-war movement, with
the tensions between Hoffman and Hayden supplying the film’s key relationship
in a kind of begrudging brotherhood of the peace movement. To learn more about
Hayden, Redmayne studied remarks that Jane Fonda, who was married to the
activist and politician from 1973 to 1990, made upon his death in 2016. In his
own life, Redmayne is cautious when it comes to discussing the role that he, as
an actor at the center of a huge studio franchise (Warner Bros.’ Fantastic Beasts)
might have in political life. "I find it endlessly challenging,"
Redmayne says of navigating his public activism. "There’s the elitist thing. It’s
speaking up on climate change but being conscious that you’re traveling a lot.
One has to be aware of one’s own hypocrisies, because they can be detrimental
to something you believe in. So sometimes I find that I have to live my life and
speak to my advocacy in a way in that it’s around friends, family and people
I know rather than making something public."

After Chicago 7 opens in limited release, Netflix will add more theaters in the U.S.
and abroad throughout October, expanding upon the film’s premiere on the service.
