And the next Eddie Redmayne film gets underway — reunited with Les Mis director Tom Hooper for The Danish Girl. Costars Alicia Vikander, Ben Whishaw. (x)

ELLE UK: BEHIND THE SCENES: Alicia Vikander talks about prep for The Danish Girl with Eddie Redmayne

"In the film, we’re married. I hadn’t worked with him before, but we presented an award at the BAFTAs last year. We also did some script-writing sessions for a week this summer leading up to rehearsals; we were able to start doing some very intense work. We sat in a room for like ten hours and just brainstormed about the script; it was really fun, but we’re handling the first ever sex change that happened, so we want to portray the story in the most dignified way." Casting:
"Ben Whishaw and Amber Heard (American actress-model), who will join Eddie Redmayne and Alicia Vikander in Tom Hooper’s film The Danish Girl, which will start shooting in early February. Redmayne plays painter Einar Wegener, and it’s about his relationship with his wife — and how it changes. Tom Hooper worked with Eddie before on Les Miserables and the Elizabeth I he shot for TV." - (x) via and (x) via and (x)
It seems like Matthias Schoenaerts joins to the movie in a supporting role too.

whishawnews.tumblr.com: Hmm.. I’ve been wondering whether or not Ben is still attached to The Danish Girl as it hasn’t been reported in any of the other entertainment sites. The only source we have is Baz Bamigboye of The Daily Mail (12 Dec) and though he’s a rather reliable news source, it does seem odd that no one else has reported on the casting news like they have for the other actors attached to the project: Amber Heard (2 Dec), Matthias Schoenaerts
(9 Jan). Then again they may just be spacing out the announcements as filming doesn’t begin until early February.
I remember Ben wasn’t “officially” announced as a cast member for Suffragette until just before filming began even though we were aware of it beforehand so this may be a similar situation.
edit: hmmm…

Contactmusic: FROM HAWKING TO HEELS: ARE YOU READY FOR EDDIE?
Oscar-nominated actor Eddie Redmayne is learning how to walk in a pair of high heels for ‘The Danish Girl’.
Eddie Redmayne is learning how to walk in a pair of high heels for his next film role.
The Oscar-nominated actor is preparing to star in ‘The Danish Girl’ - which concerns transgender pioneer Einar Wegener - and has revealed he’s working with celebrated movement director Alexandra Reynolds to ensure he’s convincing on screen.
The 33-year-old explained: ”We’re looking at everything from a feminine perspective. How to sit, to walk, to pose, roll on a pair of stockings. How to put on a pair of heels and how to walk in them. Everything.”
Eddie, who won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama for his performance in ‘The Theory of Everything’, says his new movie about Einar and his wife Gerda Gottlieb is a study of ”authenticity, identity and love”.
In preparation for the role, he’s spoken to members of the transgender community.
He told the Daily Mail newspaper: ”The danger of surgery was so extreme [in the 1920s]. It’s such a brave thing that Einar did.”

Following his recent success at the Golden Globes, Eddie said he doesn’t get overwhelmed by the attention because he’s always busy with new projects.
He shared: ”It is extraordinary. The way I stay focused is because I’m working on something else so literally I’m preparing and rehearsing for a new film that’s starting in a week or two so in some ways you’re focus is on that and it’s a very good way of remind yourself that the work is the important thing, as wonderful as this ride has been. But that’s how I try and keep my focus.” (via)

Daily Mail: BAZ BAMIGBOYE:
Now Eddie finds his female side as he prepares to play transgender woman
...Many of Gerda Gottleib’s most famous erotic paintings show a coquettish woman with beautiful legs. It later emerged that they were posed for by Einar — who also went by the name of Lili.
Interestingly, one of the big wins at the Golden Globe awards was for a TV drama on Amazon called Transparent, about another transgender person. And the Netflix hit Orange Is The New Black features a female character played by openly transgender actress Laverne Cox.

Eonline: The Theory of Everything Star Eddie Redmayne Prepares to Play Transgender Woman, First to Undergo Gender Reassignment Surgery
Eddie Redmayne ready to transform, transgender into The Danish Girl — true story of artist Einar Wegener/Lili Elbe.
"There are many people who have written Ph.D's on Lili's story," Redmayne said. "Even though it is period and under completely different circumstances than today, I'm meeting many women from the trans community and hearing their experiences." This includes trans woman who transitioned back in the 1950s and 1960s.
“I have put on dresses and wigs and makeup,” Redmayne said. “I’m beginning to embark on that and trying to find out who she is.”

Herald Sun (AU): Playing Stephen Hawking a ‘dream role’ says Oscar hopeful Eddie Redmayne
In this new interview Eddie talks about about TToE, the World War I Art documentary and his new "tricky" role.

...Once the hoo-ha of awards season is over and he comes down from the high of his December marriage to Hannah Bagshawe, it will be time for Redmayne to immerse himself in acting again. His choice, The Danish Girl — which reunites him with Les Miserables director Tom Hooper — is further proof Redmayne likes his roles tricky.
The film tells the true story of a Danish artist who in the early 1900s, after pulling on a pair of stockings and high heels to fill in when the model his wife had arranged to paint didn’t turn up, became one of the first known people to undergo gender reassignment surgery.
Redmayne laughs at the “tricky” suggestion.
“Every job comes with its challenges,” he reckons. “I remember making a television series called Birdsong in Hungary and saying to Tom, ‘This is the hardest one, it’s so tough’.
“Tom went, ‘Yeah but aren’t they always the hardest one?’ He is sort of right — if you’re putting your all into it, it always feels pretty gruelling.”
